Broken Windows and the Baltimore Police

Thursday, September 15, 2016, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Malcolm Gladwell's story on NYPD "Broken Windows" policy may have been instrumental in spreading it across the nation, including to Baltimore where it is called Zero Tolerance. This policy was rebuked in the AG report on the Baltimore Police. For our next meeting we will discuss the Broken Windows policy and its effect on the Baltimore Police.

  1. So it seems Broken Windows no longer works. Did it ever?

It also reminds me of being in the military when we were supposed to shine our shoes - attention to detail. Then one has the discipline to do the bigger things - or is that true?

    1. The real question is if Broken Windows ever worked. There are other explanations why crime dropped in the 90s.

  2. What do you think would happen if we implemented broken windows/zero tolerance policies in the control of white collar crimes or political corruption?

    1. That is a very good point. Zero-tolerance should be applied to bankers.
