Corona Comedy

Sometimes it takes a comedian to get to the truth. If the narrative is long they can hold our attention by interjecting comedy. The break from the hard facts gives us time to digest all the implications. No one does it better than John Oliver.

Here are his last two YouTube videos:
Note we saw Coronavirus I at our March 5 meeting. But if your missed it HERE it is.

How Long Will It Last

Originally the Bain Senior Center was to be closed until the end of April. All indications are the it will be longer than that, but it is too early to change the date. Remember we are the highest at risk group. We may be asked to stay in isolation longer than others. Just stay flexible and use this time constructively.

Here is a video about how long it could last:

COVID-19 Comes to Howard County

The Bain Senior Center will be closed at least until the end of April

Howard County is now in a state of emergency after it had its first reported COVID-19 case, an 82 year old resident of an assisted living facility in Elkridge. The patient, now hospitalized, had limited outside contact. This is probably a case of community spread. More information can be found on the Howard Country health alert webpage.

Updates: Governor Hogan has taken additional emergency measures, closing all bars and restaurants except for carry-out and delivery. Essential services, like grocery stores, gas stations and pharmacies are still open.

3/17/20 - Governor Hogan has postpone the 4/28 Maryland Primary to 6/2 and is setting up a vote by mail for the special Congressional election for the 7th District.

A COVID-19 infection count per county has been set up for Maryland. It is updated daily at 10am. Today it shows 3 cases in Howard County, 57 case statewide.

Coping With COVID-19

This page is to gather any questions or suggestions on dealing with COVID-19. For starters, HERE are the new CDC guidelines. HERE is an article from the Washington Post about who is most at risk and should heed these guidelines.

Older adults, even healthy ones, are at greater risk. From the Post article:
One explanation for the elderly’s higher mortality is that as people age, their immune systems age too, in the same way that bones get weaker. Cell-mediated immunity is an extremely complex process and the various elements do not synchronize as well in older people, said Wilbur Chen, a University of Maryland infectious disease physician.

People with medical conditions, regardless of age, are also at risk.
Patients of all ages with no underlying chronic conditions had a fatality rate of 1.4 percent, according to the WHO report. Covid-19 patients with cardiovascular disease had a rate of 13.2 percent; with diabetes, 9.2 percent; with hypertension, 8.4 percent; with chronic respiratory disease, 8 percent; and with cancer, 7.6 percent.
...
People over the age of 80 with one of these chronic diseases are at the highest risk and should take precautionary steps, such as avoiding crowds and nonessential travel, officials advised. Stay close to home, stockpile essential supplies and medicines, and figure out a backup plan if a caregiver becomes too sick to provide care.

On Monday, 3/9/20. Maryland Governor Hogan advised people over 60 to stay home. This is personal advice and not has been translated to any policy at the state or county level.

Update 3/12/20:
It was determined today that the latest case in Prince Georges County was caused by community spreading. Hence, Governor Hogan has issued emergency measures which include closing all seniors centers in Maryland. I just got word that the Bain Senior Center will be closed as least until the end of April.

COVID-19 Comes to Maryland

Thursday, March 12, 2020, 10:15am to 11:45 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)
The Bain Center will open at 10am on for the day of our meeting, so be prepared to wait outside if you arrive early. To allow for setup time, our meeting will start and end 15 minutes later. We should return to normal time the following week.

A few hours after our last meeting on Thursday, Maryland reported its first three cases of COVID-19. All three cases were in Montgomery County and resulted from overseas travel, not from community spreading as in California. Potential points of spread have been identified, and so far does not include anywhere in Howard County. Maryland's testing capability has dramatically increased and no other cases have yet been found. A good summary from WJZ can be found HERE.

I will prepare to cover COVID-19 for our next meeting. However, the situation is fluid and our meeting may be cancelled at any time. If you don't get an email from me, please check this website before you come.

Usually, Bain Center closings are tied to school closings. But COVID-19 threatens our age group much more than school children, and risk increases with preexisting health conditions. The fact that the Bain Center is open, does not mean that it is risk free, but nothing is. Please evaluate your personal circumstance before you decide to come.

If you have anything to add, please comment below.

Updates:

3/8/20 - There are two more COVID-19 cases in Maryland, one more in Montgomery County and one in Harford County. Both cases had travelled overseas.

Map of COVID-19 cases in the USA

Note that the two cases in Fairfax County also had overseas travel. However, the source of the case in DC has not been determined.

3/9/20 - A 6th case has been reported on Larry Hogan's Twitter feed. A Prince Georges County resident contracted it out of state. While there is no community spreading in Maryland, there is in the surrounding area, particularly in DC.

3/10/20 - The number of cases has risen to nine, 2 more in Prince Georges County, one more in Montgomery County. All three cases originated overseas.

3/11/20 - There were three more cases making the total 12, in Montgomery County, Baltimore County and Prince Georges County. The source of the infection is known for the first two cases. The third case is still under investigation.

3/12/20 - It was determined that the latest case in Prince Georges County was caused by community spreading. Hence, Governor Hogan has issued emergency measures which include closing all seniors centers in Maryland. I just got word that the Bain Senior Center will be closed as least until the end of April.

Double Doomsday, Part 2

Thursday, March 5, 2020, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

For the next meeting, we will continue the two stories from last week, covid-19 and Bernie. So far, so good. There are no confirmed covid-19 cases in Maryland and Biden beat Bernie badly South Carolina. But the virus is spreading and Bernie is the favorite today in Super Tuesday. So who knows what will happen by Thursday. See you then, stay healthy and sane.
