The Year 2019

Thursday, January 2, 2020, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Last week, we spoke mostly of the past decade. So for the next meeting, we will talk about just the past year. We will be using a series of video from ABC news which spans a broad range of topics.

Year and Decade in Review

Thursday, December 26, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Yes, the Bain Center will be open on the day after Christmas and we will hold our meeting at the usual time. Since this will be the last meeting of the year, and of the 2010s, we will discuss the top stories for the year and decade. So bring your ideas. I will have some videos, but I will only use them if necessary to kick off discussions.

Here are some worthy news stories:

Impeachment, Necessity or Distraction

Thursday, December 19, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

We know how the impeachment and Senate trial will go. But there is still an argument if it was a necessity or a distraction. Will this hurt the Democrats in the election, or would they have been hurt more if they had not impeached Trump.

Here is a video which summarizes the arguments for both sides:

Can Fossil Fuel Companies Help Fight Climate Change?

Thursday, December 5, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

COP 25 is now in progress in Madrid and the it looks like we are losing the battle against climate change. So why do so many climate activists oppose the development of technology to pull CO2 directly out of the air?

For our next meeting, we will discuss the recent rise of direct air carbon capture and the bipartisan support it is getting in Congress.

A Real Solution to Climate Change

No meeting on 11/28/19 due to Thanksgiving

Sixteen year old Greta Thunberg avoids air travel as part of her personal fight against Climate Change. So it was a big deal for her to sail across the Atlantic to give a speech at the UN Climate Summit in NYC, on September 23. She planned to stay in the Americas until the nations of the world met at COP 25 in Santiago, Chile, December 2-13, to form international climate policy. Because of the media attention she attracted, climate change would finally get a serious public discussion in the weeks leading to COP 25.

Greta's speech at the Climate Summit attacked the older generation for doing nothing to abate Climate, dooming the younger generation to the horrors of climate change. She made a big impact, but before it had a chance to sink in, the Trump Ukrainian scandal broke and has dominated the news ever since. As the Ukrainian scandal evolved into the impeachment hearings, Greta's climate rallies across America went unnoticed. Barely covered was Greta's need to sail back to Europe because COP 25 had to be moved to Madrid, Spain, because of the riots in Santiago.

Now, in the week before Thanksgiving, the open impeachment hearings have paused to give American families time to discuss the seriousness of the upcoming impeachment in the House and the trial in the Senate. Impeachment is important but it is hardly existential. So if you get tired of talking about Trump, maybe you can use your valuable family time to discuss Climate Change, especially since COP 25 starts right after Thanksgiving. But rather than repeating the expected horrors of climate chaos, or blaming the deniers and fossil energy companies, or promoting incremental steps in the right direction, maybe you could focus on what a real solution to Climate Change would look like.

Here is an example of a real Climate Change solution plan:
The speaker started his research only two years ago, so his plan is still in development. You see by the size of his audience that his ideas have yet to attract the attention of the media. Yet his arguments are convincing.

You can find more information on the speaker's website https://www.energyimpactcenter.org. If you have any questions or suggestions, please summit them to this blog as a comment. If you know of a better plan that offers a complete solution to Climate Change, instead of just a partial one, please tell us. I am not aware of any other plan.

Trump Trumps the Debates

Thursday, November 21, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

The next meeting was supposed to be about the 5th Democrats Presidential debates, but the past week has been all about Trump and tomorrow, the same day as the debates, Gordon Sondland testimony could directly implicate Trump.

There has been so much news about Trump, that I needed three late night hosts to cover it all:

So for our next meeting, we will talk about Trump again. We may cover the debate if anything good happens.

Open Impeachment Hearings

Thursday, November 14, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Our meeting will be the day after the start of the open impeachment hearings. While there may be many more days of open hearing, we should get and indication if it attracts wide public attention and has the potential to move the polls. Will these hearings be like Watergate which did turn the public against Nixon. Our meeting will cover these hearings and other Trump matters.

Here is a video from the UK which presents an unbiased perspective of tomorrow's hearing:

Hard to Give Trump Credit

Thursday, October 31, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Trump deserves credit for the killing of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, but the way he made the announcement made it difficult. Here is Stephen Colbert explaining:
For our next meeting, we will cover the al-Baghdadi kill and other things Trump this past week.

The 4th Debate

Thursday, October 17, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

The 4th Democratic Presidential Debate is tonight at 8pm on CNN, which is perfect timing for our meeting on Thursday morning. I should be able to gather debate videos by then. Here are some preview videos:

Also tonight, ABC will air its exclusive interview with Hunter Biden, before and after the debate. Here are some teasers:

As Joe Biden has fallen behind Elizabeth Warren in the polls, this could be a make or break moment for his campaign. If Biden falls, there may be an opening for another moderate to enter the race.

Trump's Phone Calls

Thursday, October 10, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

A phone call with Ukraine got Trump an impeachment investigation. Now phone call with Turkey got Trump a Republican revolt over the Syrian Kurds. This led Steven Colbert to ask, "Can We Take Away Donald Trump's Phone?"
For our next meeting, we will cover the continuation of the impeachment investigation and Trump's new policy in Syria. As both are developing stories, I will wait a day before selecting the other videos for the meeting.

Tipping Points

Thursday, September 26, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Greta Thunberg's speech before the UNGA captured the attention of the press as she warned that the climate catastrophe may have reached its tipping point. Trump was also at the UNGA. While his speech was overshadowed by Thunberg, Trump is reaching his own tipping point as the Biden-Ukraine complaint by force Pelosi to start impeachment procedures.

Both stories are developing so I will wait until Thursday morning before selecting the videos for the meeting. But are are some videos to provide background:

Debate Before Climate

Thursday, September 19, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

For the next meeting, we will review the 3rd Democrat Debate and then preview Climate Week which starts Thursday evening with the MSNBC Climate Town Hall and the continues with the Thunberg school strikes and the Climate Summit at the UN on Monday. At the debate the dems showed that they did not need the Green New Deal to push further to the left. That would normally be a problem in the general election except that Trump keeps on saying crazy things.

The Climate of the Debate

Thursday, September 12, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Our next meeting will occur on the mourning before the third Democrat debate. With Trump's showing signs of mental decline, as exemplified by Sharpie-Gate, a Democratic victory in 2020 should be assured. But at last week's CNN Climate Town Hall, the top ten Democratic candidates proposed climate change solutions that may be too radical for the average voter. Furthermore, the Democrats are proposing to do away with the filibuster to insure that their climate policies will be enacted. Even if the voters find Trump unacceptable, they may want the Republicans to keep control of the Senate.

Dorian and climate models

Thursday, September 5, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Hurricane Dorian has grown to a Cat 5 and has dominated the news for the past week, and will not be over for another week. So instead of talking about the effects of Dorian, it may be instructive to discuss why the weather models failed to predict its intensity early on. Warmer waters caused by climate change is only part of what makes a hurricane so strong. It turns out that El Nino increases wind shear which breaks up hurricane formation. Weather models have difficulty in predicting when El Nino comes and goes, which can affect the predictions for the whole season.

Weather models are analogous to climate models. Is there something in climate forecasting like El Nino that can throw off the predication of the magnitude of the coming warming? The short answer is yes, clouds.

The Amazon and Greenland

Thursday, August 29, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

The Amazon is burning and Greenland is melting, just more signs of the urgency of climate action. In addition, Tropical Storm Dorian is heading toward Puerto Rico, still recovering from hurricanes two years ago. We should know by our meeting in two days if Puerto Rico escapes harm this time.

All this before the first Presidential election town hall devoted to climate change, on CNN in eight days. Will  recent events push climate change to the top of the election agenda?

Thursday, August 22, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

The Trump presidency is now being graded on the curve, the US Treasury bond yield curve. It inverted for a short time last week and now the media is taking the possibility of an election year recession seriously. For our next meeting, we will talk about the politics of the yield curve. So for the next meeting, we will talk about the Mueller testimony for as long as people want to talk about it. Then we will open the meeting for anything else people may want to talk about.

Thursday, June 27, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

We will cover Iran downing our drone, Trump's aborted raid and his imposition  of sanctions on the Iranian leadership. I also want to spend time on background information, the Iranian leadership structure, the IRGC and perils of the Straights of Hormuz.

Thursday, June 13, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Trump declared victory against Mexico, saying that his tariff threats forced Mexico to stop the flow of refugees from Central America to the US. He dismissed claims from the NY Times that Mexico had already made those concessions before Trump's threats. Trump then claimed that he had an additional deal with Mexico, but refused to say what it was.

Trump in the UK

Thursday, June 6, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

There has been a lot of news in the UK over the past two months, but it was overshadowed by other news, mostly Trump related. Now that Trump is in the UK for an official state visit on the 75th anniversary of D-Day, we will use our next meeting to catch-up on what has been happening in the UK. Besides Trump's visit there was Boris Johnson, the Brexit Party, the Royal Family, the Extinction Rebellion and Julian Assange. But somehow they are all related to Trump.

We may have enough time to cover all the topics but here are some videos anyway:

War of Words

Thursday, May 30, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

The Trump feud with Pelosi continued last week, with Trump essentially daring Pelosi to impeach him. Pelosi still does not want to impeach, but has to be tough with Trump to keep the pro-impeachment wing in line. Trump knows this and continued to attack her. An obviously altered video to make Pelosi look drunk got circulated. Some fear that soon Deep Fake videos will make altered videos harder to detect.

Good Economy, Bad Economy

Thursday, May 16, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

The employment numbers look better and better, and the April numbers were better than expected. Still there is much employment anxiety, since we are now in a gig economy. Deadlnes and Distractions

Thursday, May 9, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

As each deadline passes for the House investigations of Trump, it is apparent that Trump will continue to stonewall all inquiries. So while we wait for the drama to play out, Trump continues to grab headlines with threats against Iran, Venezuela and China. This is "Wag the Dog" on multiple fronts.

The story is still unfolding, so I will wait another day to select the videos for the meeting. But here are two videos that summarizes the events so far. They could be old news by the time we meet on Thursday.

New Zealand to Sri Lanka to California

Thursday, May 2, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

The live streaming of the New Zealand shooter last month may have worked. The bombings in Sri Lanka, two weeks ago, may have been in retaliation. This week a shooting in San Diego and a foiled plot in Los Angeles were also inspired by the New Zealand shooting.

We can hope that another New Zealand phenomenon will also spread, the rapid passing of gun control laws. Maybe the recent disarray at the NRA will help.

For our next meeting we will see how the story unfolded from the crash, to the groundings, to the investigations, to the hearings, to the assignment if blame, and to the lawsuits.

Meanwhile in Israel

Thursday, April 11, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

Today is the Israel Knesset elections which will determine if Netanyahu continues to serve as Prime Minister. The early exit polls shows a close race as expected. We may not know the winner when we meet on Thursday.

This is a good time to catch up on the events in Israel, not only the election but also the how Trump has emboldened Netanyahu to move further to the right concerning Gaza, the West Bank and the Golan Heights in spite of his legal troubles. We will also explore Israel's recent rise as an global power in energy and technology.

Tea Party of the Left

Thursday, April 4, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

AOC is not backing down from anything in the Green New Deal as seen HERE in an MSNBC town hall meeting. She insists that the "socialism" part of the GND is essential to her plan. She rejected the characterization of leading a Tea Party of the Left, because of the morality of her movement.

The GND was just one of several partisan battles that flared this week. We also saw the renewed battle to repeal Obamacare, the border crisis and the fight to release the Mueller Report. All this played into the narrative of Howard Schultz, who said that the two parties have become too radical and will run as a centrist third party candidate if the Democrats nominate someone like Bernie Sanders. This became more likely this week with the problems of Joe Biden.

For the next meeting, we will discuss if AOC is indeed leading a Tea Party of the Left and if Howard Schultz will enter the race and insure Trump's reelection. The AOC town hall is too long for the meeting so I will try to create a shorter version.

Mueller Report and the Green New Deal

Thursday, March 28, 2019, 10am to 11:30 in the Meeting Room (behind the fireplace)

This was a bad week for Democrats. Over the weekend, the Mueller Report cleared Trump on collusion with the Russians. Then, on Tuesday, the Dems were forced to vote on the Green New Deal. They planned to all vote "Present", but three Dems and one independent voted with the Republicans to defeat the Green New Deal, 57 to 0. The six Dem Senators running for president, had cosponsored the Green New Deal.

I am still collecting videos for the meeting, but HERE is a debate on the Mueller Report, Glenn Greenwald vs. David Cay Johnston. This video is almost 40 minutes long, so we will not have time to show it at the meeting, but we will discuss it.
