Goodbye 2020 and Good Riddance

Ther title expresses all I feel. How about you?

If you want to do something to make you feel good, the IRS has allow some donations to be deducted even if you take the standard deduction:

Be sure to check if your donation qualifies. The web page gives instructions instructions but it may be hard to follow. In general the deduction applies to charities but not for non-profits like Wikipedia. Let me know if you need help to find out if your donation qualifies.

Joe and Mitch

Regardless of what happens in the Georgia runoff, the future of this country may depend mostly on the personal relation between two 78 year old men, Joe Biden and Mitch McConnell. Remember from a previous blog post, Joe Manchin pledged not end the filibuster. So even if the Democrats win control of the Senate, they will not be able to do much without the support of 10 Republican Senators. If the Republicans keep control of the Senate, they may be more willing to work with Biden on moderate policy, which may be what Biden wants anyway.

Both Biden and McConnell need to appease their base, but they seem to be able to work together; remember the accomplishments of the 2010 Lame Duck Session. Also McConnell, and many other Republican Senators, have acknowledged their friendship with Biden. Here are two videos from 2016:
After Biden was declared the winner, McConnell had to respect Trumps challenges, but it was suspected that he had privately communicated with Biden, but neither could admit it back then. Biden seemed awfully confident that a compromise would be reached.
After the Electoral College made it official, McConnell recognized Biden as President Elect in spite of Trump's protests. McConnell also encouraged all Republican Senators not to challenge the results on Jan. 6th when the Congress formally accepts the electoral votes from the states. While many Republican Congressmen will challenge the votes, they need the support of at least one Senator for the challenge to be recognized. Biden and McConnell now openly communicated on a compromise for COVID relief and it seems to be working. Trump will continue to protest, but so what.

Vaccines Cometh

It was reported that the FDA said that will soon approve the Pfizer vaccine and it should be in people's arms early next week. Not surprisingly, Trump took credit even though he had nothing to do with the development of the technology which made it possible to develop the vaccines so quickly. Trump also said that the USA will get first dibs. So low risk Americans will have access to the vaccine before high risk people of poor countries, particularly in Africa. However, the Africans may not be as bad off as we once thought. They have managed the virus quite well and a cheaper vaccine is on the way. The real people at risk are the Americans who are suffering, in spite of their wealth, because of incompetent leadership.

It's Over Again

Just when you think that it is finally over for Trump, we find that it is over for Trump again. In just the past few days, we have the Supreme Court ruling, Safe Harbor Day, and Rudy and Jenna Ellis getting COVID. It is no longer about Trump attempting a coup, but how much money Trump can bilk from his supporters. Trump is not a master con artist; his followers are just stupid beyond belief.

The Contrast

The contrast between the actions of Biden and Trump cannot be greater. Biden continues to show leadership for the country while Trump continues to act only for himself. In order to save the Senate, the Republican leadership may be looking for a way to muzzle Trump without alienating his supporters.

Can Trump Cost the Republicans the Senate?

There was a good chance that the Republicans would have won at least one of the two Senate seats in the Georgia runoff on Jan. 5th, giving them control of the Senate. Georgia is still mostly conservative and Biden's lead may be more a rejection of Trump than the support of the Democratic agenda. But Trump is making the runoff election about him. He is refusing to concede and is forcing Republicans to support his wild accusations of election fraud. The two Republican Senators in the runoff have backed Trump's call for the resignation of the Georgia Secretary of State. In the meantime, Joe Manchin is assuring Georgia voters that he will prevent the Democrats from ending the filibuster rule in the Senate. 

Trump's crazy antics cannot keep Biden from the presidency, but will discredit the Republicans that support him. Trump must know this; so why is he hurting the Republican party? It may be that Trump is riling his base to raise money to cover his debts and future endeavors. Trump does not care about Republican principles, and his supports will do whatever he says even if it hurts the Republicans. Republican incumbents still fear a Trump mean tweet and will do his bidding.

Can Trump Still Win?

The day of celebration is over. Now we are asking is there a way that Trump could still win by using the Supreme Court?

Another way the election could be stolen was covered in this article submitted my Jackie,

I personally think that Trump can only steal the election with the support from the Republican establishment. The presidency will be officially determined on 12/14/20 when the electors vote. The Georgia runoff, which will determine control of the Senate, is on 1/5/21. If Trump steals the election, the Republicans risk the wrath of Georgia voters. If Biden officially becomes president, there is a good chance that Georgia voters will vote for the Republican Senators, just to maintain the balance of power. The Republicans will gladly throw Trump under the bus to keep the Senate. Right now the Republicans need to placate the Trump supporters while they let Trump go.

Pennsylvania has just been called for Biden, which puts him past 270, even without Arizona. Unlike, most news, AP had called Arizona for Biden since Tuesday. Soon after its Pennsylvania call, AP called Nevada for Biden, which puts Biden at 270, even without Pennsylvania.

Election Overtime

It is only a question of time for the race to be called for Biden, but the recounts and legal challenges will take the election into overtime. Biden is expected to prevail, but the chance of violence grows. The hope now is for establishment Republicans to call for a peace and to let the process plays itself out.

So Who Won?

AP calls the election for Biden

We did not get the overwhelming repudiation of Trump. For now it looks like a narrow victory for Biden, but the Republicans will probably hold the Senate and gain seats in the House. We can dissect how the polls could have been so wrong later, but our attention will be on Trump's attempt to use the Supreme Court to bias the vote count in his favor. Even if Trump fails and Biden is declared the winner, Trump will not concede and may incite violence. It will then be up to the Republican establishment to stop Trump and let Biden assume the presidency. If it is certain that the Republicans will retain the Senate, and thus keep the Supreme Court, they may be more willing to lose the Presidency. They will be able to stop anything that Biden proposes. All the Democrats can do is to wait for the 2022 midterm election.
I have been monitoring the election results by the minute. The best source of current information may be AP, which is what you get if you google "Election Results". The election summary was compiled by the Google search engine from data it extracted from AP. If you found a better source of free up to the minute information, please let me know.

    Is it Over for the Republicans?

    The last debate is over and Trump is out of time and money. During the debate, Trump behaved himself, but still made the gaff of the debate when he took the responsibility for the COVID response, but not the blame. Today, Biden released his COVID action plan and sounded like a real president. COVID is on the rise and is likely to dominate the news for the next 11 days, when the voting is finished. The issue is no longer if Trump can win, but how much other Republicans will go down with him.

    Dueling Town Halls

    With Trump lagging behind Biden by 12% in the latest national polls, last night's dueling town halls may have been Trump's last chance to gain momentum. But it was Biden who captured attention by promising to reveal if he supports adding more justices to the Supreme Court before election day. Is it all over for Trump?
